GIMP Black And WhiteA very classy black and white conversion with soft-glow filtering – ready to print, frame and hang on the wall.

  1. Launch GIMP and open this photo: horse.jpg.

  2. From the menu, select “Colors>Components>Channel Mixer”.

  3. From the Channel Mixer window, check the “Monochrome” and “Preserve Luminiosity” check boxes.  Click “OK”.

  4. Again from the menu, select “Colors>Brightness-Contrast”.

  5. Drive up the contrast to about 30 or 40.  Adjust brightness up or down according to what you find is a suitable level.  In my case, Brightness: –20 – Contrast: +40.

  6. Again, from the menu, select “Filters>Artistic>Softglow…”

  7. From the Softglow filter window, adjust Glow radius to 10, Brightness to 0,75 and Sharpness to 0,75 and click “OK”.

  8. There you have it…

  9. This also works well trimmed out with black trim on top and bottom…
