A very classy black and white conversion with soft-glow filtering – ready to print, frame and hang on the wall.
- Launch GIMP and open this photo: horse.jpg.
- From the menu, select “Colors>Components>Channel Mixer”.
- From the Channel Mixer window, check the “Monochrome” and “Preserve Luminiosity” check boxes. Click “OK”.
- Again from the menu, select “Colors>Brightness-Contrast”.
- Drive up the contrast to about 30 or 40. Adjust brightness up or down according to what you find is a suitable level. In my case, Brightness: –20 – Contrast: +40.

- Again, from the menu, select “Filters>Artistic>Softglow…”
- From the Softglow filter window, adjust Glow radius to 10, Brightness to 0,75 and Sharpness to 0,75 and click “OK”.
- There you have it…
- This also works well trimmed out with black trim on top and bottom…
