joomla_ajax

The latest release of Firefox 3 (rumors suggest all other browsers besides Internet Explorer but I’ve yet to confirm this) brought with it an unexpected issue on some sites running AJAX powered modules.

More specifically, in my case, the issue was with this very site.  Dodisdodat.com runs on Joomla and uses several third party extensions to provide users with improved functionality and useful features.  Among these extensions are jQuery, MooTools, JomSocial and a few Rockettheme modules including RokStories, RokNewsPager and RokAjaxSearch.

This is what my RokStories module is supposed to look like:

This is what it looked like prior to the fix:

I was also having issues with my RokNewsPager pagination buttons…

…and my RokAjaxSearch module…

Over the last few days, all Rok (Rockettheme) modules ceased to function in Firefox.  I went about searching for a solution and, as it turns out, I’m not the only one that was experiencing this particular problem.  Many report issues with AJAX unrelated to Joomla sites while others had a similar issue to mine with Rok modules and Yoo modules and more.

There were quite a few “fixes” available, although most required some module or browser hacking or js coding.  With further investigation, I was able to narrow down my issue as a conflict occurring  with jQuery and my AJAX powered modules.

For those of you running Joomla, a quick and simple solution is to download and install the  “SC jQuery” plugin from the Joomla Extension Directory ( http://extensions.joomla.org/extensions/core-enhancements/scripts/7230 ).

This great GPL contribution from Phil Snell set the jQuery “no conflict” mode, which allows other libraries to use the “$” operator, without any coding or hacking at all.

To install, login to your administrator panel.  From the menu select “Extensions>Install/Uninstall”.

joomla_FF_ajax_jquery1

Click the browse button and navigate to the location where you downloaded the SC jQuery plugin (plg_system_scjquery).

joomla_FF_ajax_jquery2

Click “Upload File & Install”…

Once installed, you need to enable the plugin.  From the menu select “Extensions>Plugin Manager”.

In the Filter search field, type “jquery” and click “Go”.  Locate the “System – SC jQuery” plugin and click on the red and white “x” on dot icon in the “Enabled” column to enable the plugin.

This worked for me without any additional configuration.  If you have any issues or require more information about the plugin you can find it at Phil Snell’s site – www.snellcode.com .
